Fruiting Body vs Mycelium: What's in Your Mushroom Supplement?

What's the difference between fruiting body and mycelium?

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself — the part you'd recognise, harvested once it has fully formed. Mycelium is the root-like network the mushroom grows from. Both are part of the same organism, but they're not the same material, and they don't test the same in the lab.

Why does it matter for a supplement?

Most commercial mycelium products are grown on grain, and the grain can't be fully separated out. Part of what's in the bag can be the substrate the mycelium grew on, not mushroom. Fruiting-body products don't have that problem: what's harvested is the mushroom.

How can you tell what you're buying?

Two numbers on a lab report: beta-glucans (the compounds functional mushrooms are valued for) and starch (a marker of grain filler). High beta-glucans with low starch is what a clean fruiting-body product looks like. If a brand doesn't publish batch results, you're taking the label's word for it.

What does Mala use?
