Australian-Grown vs Imported Mushroom Supplements: What's the Difference?
Most mushroom supplements sold in Australia are grown overseas, processed into extract powder before export, and sold here with little way to verify what's in the bag. Australian-grown alternatives now exist — this guide explains the real differences, and how to check any brand's claims yourself, including ours.
Where do most mushroom supplements sold in Australia come from?
The majority of lion's mane, reishi and other functional mushroom products on the Australian market are imported, most commonly as pre-made extract powders. By the time an imported powder reaches a local brand, it has typically passed through growers, processors, exporters and brokers — which makes it hard for anyone, including the brand selling it, to trace how it was grown, what part of the mushroom was used, and what else is in the powder.
Some imported powders are fine. The problem is you can't tell which ones, and this is something you swallow every day.
The comparison, side by side
| Mala Wellness | Typical imported mushroom powder | |
|---|---|---|
| Grown in | Stokers Siding, Northern NSW, Australia | Overseas, location often undisclosed |
| Certified organic | Yes — Southern Cross Certification, farm-to-bottle | Varies; often covers the raw ingredient only, if at all |
| Part of mushroom used | 100% fruiting body | Frequently mycelium grown on grain |
| Fillers | None — no grain, starch or additives | Grain/starch carryover is common in mycelium products |
| Processing | Low-temperature, on-farm control | Unknown; high-heat spray drying is common |
| Lab testing | Every batch, independently by ACS Laboratory, results published | Rarely published |
| Traceability | Single farm, one pair of hands, farm to bottle | Multi-step international supply chain |
Fruiting body vs mycelium: why it matters
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom — the part you'd recognise growing on a log. Mycelium is the root-like network the mushroom grows from, and commercial mycelium products are usually cultivated on grain (rice or oats). When that biomass is harvested, the grain comes with it, so a significant portion of what's in the bag can be starch rather than mushroom.
Fruiting bodies typically contain higher levels of the compounds people take these mushrooms for — beta-glucans, and in lion's mane's case, hericenones. Mala products are 100% fruiting body, and our published lab results confirm no grain fillers or added starch.
If a brand doesn't say which part it uses, that's usually your answer.
How to verify any mushroom brand's claims (ours included)
- Check the certification, not the word "organic." In Australia, look for a named certifier (ours is Southern Cross Certification) and ask what it covers — the ingredient, or the whole process.
- Ask where it was grown — a place, not a country. "Made in Australia" can legally describe imported powder packed locally. A grower can name their farm. Ours is at Stokers Siding in the Northern Rivers, NSW.
- Read the lab report. Look for independent third-party testing, batch-level results, beta-glucan content rather than vague "polysaccharides," and a starch test — high starch is the fingerprint of grain filler. We publish our ACS Laboratory results for every batch.
- Look for the part used. "Fruiting body" should be stated plainly on the label.
- Check the ingredients list length. A pure mushroom powder has one ingredient.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mala Wellness grown in Australia?
Yes — every Mala mushroom is grown on our farm at Stokers Siding, Northern NSW, and never leaves the country between harvest and bottle.
Is Australian-grown better?
It's more traceable and more accountable — you can see who grew it, how it was certified, and how it was tested. Freshness is also on our side: our mushrooms are processed on-farm at low temperatures shortly after harvest rather than shipped internationally as bulk powder.
Why is Australian-grown more expensive?
Australian land, labour and organic certification cost more than bulk imported extract. You're paying for a single-origin product with published proof of what's in it. One 100g pouch is a three-month supply, which works out to just over a dollar a day.
Do you use fruiting body or mycelium?
Fruiting body only, always. No mycelium, no grain, no fillers.
How do I know it's really tested?
Every batch is tested by ACS Laboratory, an independent lab, and we publish the results on our Lab Results page.
